'On the night of January 1, 1935, I was walking along the Cannebiere in Marseilles … I was unhappy, and most things had gone wrong with my life. It was a brilliant night … suddenly it occurred to me that I ought to write. Not just a development of one man's life … but also a series of other stories, as it were at right angles to the personal story, interplaying with it, conducting a kind of dialectic with the personal themes, out of which one man's experience could emerge …' (The Story of Strangers and Brothers, p. 1).
